Young, humble and someone you'd love to know
Such were the charateristics of Olive Barstow.
With lots of desires and plenty of dreams
Olive was ambitious to go places ever unseen
A quiet new student at the neighborhood school
To most kids, Olive was invisible and not very cool
She wanted to befriend a girl in her class
Both wantting to be writers, only ones came to pass
Olive was compassionate and sweet, but so very shy
She still had lots of life ahead, why did she have to die?

Yari - Theme Detective

What is a possible theme for the book?
I think that maybe the theme could be Martha trying to honor Olive because she died and because Olive thought that Martha was really nice.

What in your reading led you to this decision?
Martha started a novel and made Olive the main character.
Ex. 1: Martha was talking to her grandma about a novel she wanted to write and told her it was about Olive.
(pg. 58)
Ex. 2: She wanted to know more about Olive because Olive had written about her hopes and had wanted to be friends with Martha.
Paragraph:
I think it's very obvious that Martha felt bad about what had happened to Olive. Because of that, and what Olive thought about her, she started a novel about her. Also, later she tries to give Olive's mom a jar of sea water because she doesn't finish the novel.

Where did Martha go to visit and when?

What did martha and Godbee promise each other?

Who kissed Martha and what was it for?

Martha went to visit Godbee over the summer at her beach house. They promised each other that they would tell one another something about them that either one of them knew. At the Benton house Jimmy kissed martha for a bet, but also for his movie. After the kiss she felt sick.

Niah-Theme Detector

Ex. 1: I think it's about Martha writing a story on Olive.

Ex. 2: I talked about that a lot.

Paragraph:

Olive dies and Martha gets Olive's "letter" about her hopes. Martha finds out about Olive and that she and Olive have a lot in common. Martha goes to her grandmother's house and meets up with the Mannings. The oldest, Jimmy Manning is shooting a film and fakes he likes Martha. Martha starts wrinting a story about Olive.

Ansley- Poet

Jimmy Manning thought he was so

wonderful and great
So handsome and strong better than
Tate
But on the inside he was so mean
If only Martha could have seen
Marha fell for his looks and fake
kindness
When she was around him she felt
mindless
But then she found out it was all fake
She wished she was a bird that could
fly away
Then she realized life was for the living
It was a gift that kept on giving
